Waveguide Crossguide Directional Coupler

Its core function is to directionally extract partial electromagnetic energy from the main waveguide to the auxiliary waveguide, while ensuring negligible energy leakage at the isolated port.

The Crossguide / Cruciform Directional Coupler is a four-port microwave and millimeter-wave passive component. It adopts an orthogonal cross structure of rectangular waveguides and achieves directional coupling through cruciform slots. Its core function is to directionally extract partial electromagnetic energy from the main waveguide to the auxiliary waveguide, while ensuring negligible energy leakage at the isolated port. With compact size, excellent broadband performance and high power handling capability, it is extensively applied for power monitoring, signal sampling, power distribution and synthesis in radar, communication, test and measurement microwave systems.
It is composed of two matched rectangular waveguides arranged at a 90° orthogonal angle. The main waveguide undertakes bulk energy transmission, while the auxiliary waveguide is dedicated to coupled energy extraction. The shared broad wall of the two waveguides acts as the key coupling area for electromagnetic energy transmission.

Classification by Port Configuration

  • Standard Four-Port Type

Equipped with 1 input port, 2 through port, 3 coupled port and 4 isolated port, as well as standard waveguide flanges for high versatility. An external matched load is required for the isolated port. As the most fundamental configuration, it is suitable for general system integration and compatible with most waveguide interconnection requirements.

  • Terminated Load Type

The isolated port (Port 4) is pre-installed with an integrated waveguide matched load, forming a three-port device including input, through and coupled ports. No external load is required. Featuring compact outline and anti-reflection performance, it is ideal for embedded installation and space-constrained systems, which simplifies overall layout and improves assembly efficiency.

  • Coaxial Output Type

The coupled port (Port 3) integrates a waveguide-to-coaxial transition adapter (SMA / N type) for direct RF signal output. It enables convenient connection with coaxial systems, widely used on testing instruments to solve interconnection problems between waveguide and coaxial circuits, and meets flexible demands of test and measurement scenarios.
