Waveguide High-pass Filter

Waveguide high-pass filters transmit signals above a defined cut-off frequency with low insertion loss while strongly attenuating lower frequencies. They are used to eliminate unwanted low-frequency components, harmonics of local oscillators, and interference in broadband microwave systems.

A waveguide high-pass filter is a passive microwave device that passes frequencies above a specific cut-off point and rejects all frequencies below it. It exploits the inherent high-pass characteristic of waveguide itself: below the waveguide’s cut-off frequency, electromagnetic energy cannot propagate. By carefully shaping the internal geometry with irises or stepped transitions, the filter sharpens the cut-off and extends the upper passband to many times the cut-off frequency. Ideal for harmonic rejection, image suppression, and broadband satellite or test systems.

Working Principle
The filter is based on the natural cut-off phenomenon of a rectangular waveguide. A precisely dimensioned waveguide section is used; frequencies below its cut-off are heavily attenuated because the waveguide acts as a high-pass “pipe.” To achieve a steeper cut-off and lower passband insertion loss, additional reactive structures (capacitive gaps, ridges, or stepped heights) are machined inside. These elements broaden the passband and sharpen the transition near the cut-off while maintaining a physical structure that can manage high power. The result is a filter with a very wide passband extending to the upper limits of the waveguide’s operating range.

Key Features

  • Ultra-Wide Passband: Provides low-loss transmission from the specified cut-off frequency up to several octaves.

  • Sharp Cut-off: Attenuates all frequencies below cut-off with high rejection; ideal for removing IF leakage or low-frequency noise.

  • Low Insertion Loss: Typical passband loss < 0.3 dB due to all-metal waveguide construction.

  • High Power Capability: Handles substantial CW and peak power without heating or nonlinear effects.

  • Simple, Robust Design: One-piece waveguide body requires no tuning for many applications; stable over temperature.

  • Standard Waveguide Interfaces: Flange connections ensure seamless integration with mixers, amplifiers, and antennas.
